Narrative:
F/a's notified cockpit of possible fire in aft lav trash can. Captain had me proceed to cabin for verification/corrective action. I found trash can full of white smoke, but fire had been extinguished by F/a's. We diverted into rdu to have maintenance check lav. Passenger had disposed of cigarette in lav trash can! The passenger was idented and removed from flight.
