Narrative:
It had been 5 1/2 months since I have flown in the ATC system. I had just finished initial ground school and flight training on the mdt as captain. My first trip yip-mem was IOE (initial operating experience) with a company check airman in the right seat and first officer in the jump seat. En route after crossing over the fwa VOR I had a question as to the route of flight. The check airman picked up the flight plan on the clipboard and then picked up the low en route chart and told me the outbnd course. I tuned in the course and proceeded to track it. It turned that we were tracking the wrong arwy. The check airman looked at the flight plan with some confusion and must have given me the wrong course and I failed to back it up by not looking at the flight plan at that time. Center then gave us a heading to intercept the proper course.

MY FIRST TRIP YIP-MEM WAS IOE (INITIAL OPERATING EXPERIENCE) WITH A COMPANY CHK AIRMAN IN THE R SEAT AND F/O IN THE JUMP SEAT. ENRTE AFTER XING OVER THE FWA VOR I HAD A QUESTION AS TO THE RTE OF FLT. THE CHK AIRMAN PICKED UP THE FLT PLAN ON THE CLIPBOARD AND THEN PICKED UP THE LOW ENRTE CHART AND TOLD ME THE OUTBND COURSE. I TUNED IN THE COURSE AND PROCEEDED TO TRACK IT. IT TURNED THAT WE WERE TRACKING THE WRONG ARWY. THE CHK AIRMAN LOOKED AT THE FLT PLAN WITH SOME CONFUSION AND MUST HAVE GIVEN ME THE WRONG COURSE AND I FAILED TO BACK IT UP BY NOT LOOKING AT THE FLT PLAN AT THAT TIME. CTR THEN GAVE US A HDG TO INTERCEPT THE PROPER COURSE.
