Narrative:
Approaching dfw on scurry 1 arrival on scy 296 degree right, 32 mi outbnd received call from approach control re: traffic at 10 O'clock, several mi away, climbing to 10000'. We responded that we were looking for traffic. We then got a TA on our TCAS, which several seconds later, went to an right/a. This required us to climb (we climbed to approximately 11500' which we did, until TCAS issued 'clear of traffic.' then we promptly returned to the assigned altitude of 11000'. Approach control was notified. Supplemental information from acn 182302: while responding to climb RA I told first officer to advise ATC we were climbing to a climb RA. We were then cleared to 120000' and advised the traffic was level at 10000'. We were asked why we were climbing and again we advised ATC because of a climb RA. TCAS then issued a clear of conflict. Were then reclred 11000' to which we complied. No further incident. My personal feeling is the other aircraft climb rate was interpreted by TCAS and projected to a be a conflict when in reality because the other aircraft did level at 10000' was really no conflict at all.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ALT DEVIATION ALT EXCURSION OCCURS AFTER ACR MLG RECEIVES A TCASII RA ON OPPOSITE DIRECTION CLIMBING DEP TRAFFIC.
Narrative: APCHING DFW ON SCURRY 1 ARR ON SCY 296 DEG R, 32 MI OUTBND RECEIVED CALL FROM APCH CTL RE: TFC AT 10 O'CLOCK, SEVERAL MI AWAY, CLBING TO 10000'. WE RESPONDED THAT WE WERE LOOKING FOR TFC. WE THEN GOT A TA ON OUR TCAS, WHICH SEVERAL SECS LATER, WENT TO AN R/A. THIS REQUIRED US TO CLB (WE CLBED TO APPROX 11500' WHICH WE DID, UNTIL TCAS ISSUED 'CLR OF TFC.' THEN WE PROMPTLY RETURNED TO THE ASSIGNED ALT OF 11000'. APCH CTL WAS NOTIFIED. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 182302: WHILE RESPONDING TO CLB RA I TOLD F/O TO ADVISE ATC WE WERE CLBING TO A CLB RA. WE WERE THEN CLRED TO 120000' AND ADVISED THE TFC WAS LEVEL AT 10000'. WE WERE ASKED WHY WE WERE CLBING AND AGAIN WE ADVISED ATC BECAUSE OF A CLB RA. TCAS THEN ISSUED A CLR OF CONFLICT. WERE THEN RECLRED 11000' TO WHICH WE COMPLIED. NO FURTHER INCIDENT. MY PERSONAL FEELING IS THE OTHER ACFT CLB RATE WAS INTERPRETED BY TCAS AND PROJECTED TO A BE A CONFLICT WHEN IN REALITY BECAUSE THE OTHER ACFT DID LEVEL AT 10000' WAS REALLY NO CONFLICT AT ALL.
