Narrative:
Air carrier X departed dfw for lgb. Company flight with similar #south departed dfw from runway 18L just ahead of air carrier X. During the climb out between 6000 and 10000 departure control issued a clearance for air carrier X to climb to 17000 and increase speed to 320 KTS out of 10000. The first officer acknowledged and read back the clearance. All of this was heard and confirmed by all crew members in the cockpit. Air carrier X started to climb to 17000. Out of 10000 the aircraft nose was lowered to increase speed from 250 to 320 KTS. Departure control called traffic air carrier Y at 11 O'clock at 10000. At 10400 MSL air carrier X had a visual on air carrier Y at 11000 and now approximately 1 mi away, and stopped the climb, as the 2 aircraft were converging. Air carrier X stopped the cob by 10500 and started to descend to 10000. At this point I had the first officer call ATC for an altitude confirmation. ATC came back and said we were cleared to 10000. I asked what was going on and requested a telephone # for a call once on the ground. ATC responded that the matter was already under investigation. Later en route company flight and air carrier X were miscalled by center, on a couple of occasions. Upon reaching our destination I telephoned the ATC supervisor and spoke with him. He confirmed after reviewing the tapes that the controller had issued a climb clearance to air carrier X but had intended to issue a climb clearance to company flight similar #south.

Title: DEP CTLR ISSUED CLB CLRNC TO WRONG ACFT. ACR X HAD LTSS FROM ACR Y. SYS ERROR.
Narrative: ACR X DEPARTED DFW FOR LGB. COMPANY FLT WITH SIMILAR #S DEPARTED DFW FROM RWY 18L JUST AHEAD OF ACR X. DURING THE CLB OUT BTWN 6000 AND 10000 DEP CTL ISSUED A CLRNC FOR ACR X TO CLB TO 17000 AND INCREASE SPD TO 320 KTS OUT OF 10000. THE FO ACKNOWLEDGED AND READ BACK THE CLRNC. ALL OF THIS WAS HEARD AND CONFIRMED BY ALL CREW MEMBERS IN THE COCKPIT. ACR X STARTED TO CLB TO 17000. OUT OF 10000 THE ACFT NOSE WAS LOWERED TO INCREASE SPD FROM 250 TO 320 KTS. DEP CTL CALLED TFC ACR Y AT 11 O'CLOCK AT 10000. AT 10400 MSL ACR X HAD A VISUAL ON ACR Y AT 11000 AND NOW APPROX 1 MI AWAY, AND STOPPED THE CLB, AS THE 2 ACFT WERE CONVERGING. ACR X STOPPED THE COB BY 10500 AND STARTED TO DSND TO 10000. AT THIS POINT I HAD THE FO CALL ATC FOR AN ALT CONFIRMATION. ATC CAME BACK AND SAID WE WERE CLRED TO 10000. I ASKED WHAT WAS GOING ON AND REQUESTED A TELEPHONE # FOR A CALL ONCE ON THE GND. ATC RESPONDED THAT THE MATTER WAS ALREADY UNDER INVESTIGATION. LATER ENRTE COMPANY FLT AND ACR X WERE MISCALLED BY CENTER, ON A COUPLE OF OCCASIONS. UPON REACHING OUR DEST I TELEPHONED THE ATC SUPVR AND SPOKE WITH HIM. HE CONFIRMED AFTER REVIEWING THE TAPES THAT THE CTLR HAD ISSUED A CLB CLRNC TO ACR X BUT HAD INTENDED TO ISSUE A CLB CLRNC TO COMPANY FLT SIMILAR #S.
