Narrative:
At 11000 got a 'TA' then a 'RA' alert on TCAS that commanded a 2500 FPM rate of climb for traffic at 10500 flying VFR. Just before the 'RA' command, ATC advised of traffic at 10500. The first officer was flying and reacted to the 'RA' by climbing to 11600. We had what we thought was the traffic in sight but we couldn't be sure because that particular aircraft did not seem to be that much of a conflict. ATC was advised of our altitude deviation. ATC did not seem that concerned. The traffic passed about 1 NM off our right side and was level at 10500. (We were on the 'nanci' arrival to lga.)
