Narrative:
Air carrier X was in a climb to FL230 under control of columbus approach. I saw mlt Y off the nose about 10 mi away and I thought we were following him into dfw. We soon realized he was coming towards us around co-altitude. About 3 mi away the controller gave us a left turn to both of us. Mlt Y initially turned towards us and then corrected. We passed abeam and 1 1/2 mi and 1000 ft lower. The controller gave us no heads up calls until the 3 mi and sounded very bored with the whole thing. I don't understand why we were handoff to columbus approach anyway.
