Narrative:
After leaving hampton, nh (7b3) we were on our way to indiana. We stopped at maben, ny for a rest. We departed for kirkwood, ny. Landed there to find no fuel or people. I flight planned to towanda, PA and planned on having 30 mins reserve upon arrival. Leaving kirkwood bound for towanda about halfway, over stevensville, the engine quit. All efforts to attempt to get it running were tried (carburetor heat, mixture, fuel selection, etc.). I chose a field to land but aircraft landed 75 yards short of the field I wanted. The field was full of hills and tall grass. The gear collapsed and the aircraft spun around backwards to a stop. During this time I don't remember any of it. (We may have been unconscious or in shock.) I remember getting out and helping my front seat passenger, at this time I turned off the battery switch. When I was outside the aircraft assisting my passenger I noticed the grass was very dry, so I went back in to turn off the fuel and pull the mixture to idle cut off. At this time a farmer who lived nearby drove up and took us to a doctor. The passenger in the front received a cut over his right eye (shoulder straps not installed in front seat). I received bruises on my ribs and sides. (Shoulder straps were installed and worn in rear cockpit.
