Narrative:

After receiving taxi instructions for runway 9L from miami ground, I taxied out to runway 9R, crossing runway 12. I interpreted the clearance as runway 9R with clearance to cross all runways en route. After crossing runway 12 we realized we should have gone to ry 9L. We called ground control and received a clearance to runway 9R. This conflict occurred, I believe for a combination of reasons. There was a lot of congestion on ground control radio frequency. As we were taxiing out, the first officer was busy receiving weight and balance information and setting the appropriate controls, as we were running the pretkof checklist, distraction his attention. I think this situation and others like it could be avoided by the use of some type of very visible indication to preclude taxi on to an active runway. (Red flashing light). I'm surprised that this type of conflict doesn't occur more often considering the mass confusion at busy airports.

Narrative: AFTER RECEIVING TAXI INSTRUCTIONS FOR RWY 9L FROM MIAMI GND, I TAXIED OUT TO RWY 9R, XING RWY 12. I INTERPRETED THE CLRNC AS RWY 9R WITH CLRNC TO CROSS ALL RWYS ENRTE. AFTER XING RWY 12 WE REALIZED WE SHOULD HAVE GONE TO RY 9L. WE CALLED GND CTL AND RECEIVED A CLRNC TO RWY 9R. THIS CONFLICT OCCURRED, I BELIEVE FOR A COMBINATION OF REASONS. THERE WAS A LOT OF CONGESTION ON GND CTL RADIO FREQ. AS WE WERE TAXIING OUT, THE FO WAS BUSY RECEIVING WT AND BALANCE INFO AND SETTING THE APPROPRIATE CTLS, AS WE WERE RUNNING THE PRETKOF CHKLIST, DISTR HIS ATTN. I THINK THIS SITUATION AND OTHERS LIKE IT COULD BE AVOIDED BY THE USE OF SOME TYPE OF VERY VISIBLE INDICATION TO PRECLUDE TAXI ON TO AN ACTIVE RWY. (RED FLASHING LIGHT). I'M SURPRISED THAT THIS TYPE OF CONFLICT DOESN'T OCCUR MORE OFTEN CONSIDERING THE MASS CONFUSION AT BUSY ARPTS.
