Narrative:
We were given a clearance direct mqp. Captain proceeded direct with his #1 HSI. After a while center questioned us about going direct. He said we were going 20 degree away from mqp. Captain's HSI was acting strange but it still looked like to us he was going direct. Captain proceeded to jump on the controller. The controller was light, we were going away from mwp (verified on #2 navigation). Captain's navigation went inoperative with no flag. We wrote it up in iah.
