Narrative:
I flew over the field (twice) to determine the active runways and wind direction. I followed another plane in on runway 25; unicom was unavailable or flight conditions and I was not aware of AWOS or frequency to monitor. Made a normal left handed pattern and used full flaps to land at 65-70 KTS. Reached aim point and started to flare and correct for x-wind (winds at 230, velocity unknown). Plane bounced hard twice, at which time I maintained control and pwred up for a go around; took off, went around and decided to land on runway 18. I landed normally and taxied to parking area; I then cancelled my flight plan and inspected the plane. I noticed a depressed nosewheel strut and fluid on cowling. I contacted my school and had a mechanic chkout the plane. Strut was damaged and wheel was cut. The school sent someone to fly me home because plane needed a new strut.
