Narrative:
Landed runway 24R, 'cleared across 24L then contact ground control.' we cleared 24R on taxiway 65, could not see the taxiway lights for the continuation of taxiway 65 on the south side of 24L, but did see the lights for taxiway 61, so we turned left on 24L, and then right on taxiway 61. There was no traffic conflict. I think that the reason we did not see taxiway 65 is because the entrance to it is a large area, whereas taxiway 61 is smaller and the taxiway itself is more identifiable. (2 clear rows of lights indicate a taxiway more clearly than a sea of lights). We should have studied the airport diagram more thoroughly before landing. While on the subject of lax, the taxiway markings are inadequate. When taxiing wbound on juliet and kilo (south side of airport) none of the cross taxiways are marked. This makes it difficult to identify when told 'hold short of taxiway 41.'
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR MLG UNAUTH RWY ENTRY TAXI AT LAX.
Narrative: LANDED RWY 24R, 'CLRED ACROSS 24L THEN CONTACT GND CTL.' WE CLRED 24R ON TAXIWAY 65, COULD NOT SEE THE TAXIWAY LIGHTS FOR THE CONTINUATION OF TAXIWAY 65 ON THE S SIDE OF 24L, BUT DID SEE THE LIGHTS FOR TAXIWAY 61, SO WE TURNED L ON 24L, AND THEN R ON TAXIWAY 61. THERE WAS NO TFC CONFLICT. I THINK THAT THE REASON WE DID NOT SEE TAXIWAY 65 IS BECAUSE THE ENTRANCE TO IT IS A LARGE AREA, WHEREAS TAXIWAY 61 IS SMALLER AND THE TAXIWAY ITSELF IS MORE IDENTIFIABLE. (2 CLR ROWS OF LIGHTS INDICATE A TAXIWAY MORE CLRLY THAN A SEA OF LIGHTS). WE SHOULD HAVE STUDIED THE ARPT DIAGRAM MORE THOROUGHLY BEFORE LNDG. WHILE ON THE SUBJECT OF LAX, THE TAXIWAY MARKINGS ARE INADEQUATE. WHEN TAXIING WBOUND ON JULIET AND KILO (S SIDE OF ARPT) NONE OF THE CROSS TAXIWAYS ARE MARKED. THIS MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO IDENT WHEN TOLD 'HOLD SHORT OF TAXIWAY 41.'
