Narrative:
While being vectored to join the volls I arrival at 10000 ft into bna, my first officer and I noticed traffic on our TCASII display. The traffic was rather close on the nose and we began looking. Next, our TCASII issued a RA of 'climb, climb'. The autoplt was on, so I disconnected and climbed to 10700 and notified ATC. His response was, 'that traffic should be below you, wait a min, well, I guess he, he's behind you descend and maintain 10000 ft when able'. No other mention of the event was ever made or implied. We returned to 10000 and continued to bna uneventfully. Note: we never made visual with the traffic.
