Narrative:

Night unscheduled cargo run with pilot trainee in right seat. After landing, asked trainee, who was handling the radios, to request progressive taxi instructions. Controller issued them precisely but apparently did not keep an eye on our progress. At one point, I became unsure of our position and stopped. Shortly thereafter, controller read our call sign and said, 'stop'. We were headed for a runway, upon which an airliner was landing at the time. We waited until the aircraft was clear and, with controller's instructions, turned around and taxied to the ramp without further incident. Development of better airport lighting and marking system will help, but pilots also should copy down taxi clrncs, read them back for verification and proceed with reference to the airport diagram.

Title: GA SMA GOT LOST ON IND ARPT AT NIGHT AFTER LNDG ALMOST CAUSING A RWY INCURSION.

Narrative: NIGHT UNSCHEDULED CARGO RUN WITH PLT TRAINEE IN R SEAT. AFTER LNDG, ASKED TRAINEE, WHO WAS HANDLING THE RADIOS, TO REQUEST PROGRESSIVE TAXI INSTRUCTIONS. CTLR ISSUED THEM PRECISELY BUT APPARENTLY DID NOT KEEP AN EYE ON OUR PROGRESS. AT ONE POINT, I BECAME UNSURE OF OUR POS AND STOPPED. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, CTLR READ OUR CALL SIGN AND SAID, 'STOP'. WE WERE HEADED FOR A RWY, UPON WHICH AN AIRLINER WAS LNDG AT THE TIME. WE WAITED UNTIL THE ACFT WAS CLR AND, WITH CTLR'S INSTRUCTIONS, TURNED AROUND AND TAXIED TO THE RAMP WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. DEVELOPMENT OF BETTER ARPT LIGHTING AND MARKING SYS WILL HELP, BUT PLTS ALSO SHOULD COPY DOWN TAXI CLRNCS, READ THEM BACK FOR VERIFICATION AND PROCEED WITH REF TO THE ARPT DIAGRAM.
