Narrative:

On buzzy approach into rdu approximately 20 mi southwest at 8000 ft autoplt on, copilot flying. Approach issued traffic at 11 O'clock and about 3 mi at 7500 MSL heading towards us. As the airplane (target) closed TCASII target changed to yellow and issued warning 'traffic'. Then TCASII indicated target climbing to approximately 7700 ft and shortly thereafter began giving climb instructions as target became red. RA, we climbed about 400 ft to 8400 and traffic passed off left wing. Traffic was never seen by either crew member. Other plane was small aircraft and WX was high scattered and visibility was restr to 3 mi due to haze. After traffic cleared we descended back to 8000 ft.

Narrative: ON BUZZY APCH INTO RDU APPROX 20 MI SW AT 8000 FT AUTOPLT ON, COPLT FLYING. APCH ISSUED TFC AT 11 O'CLOCK AND ABOUT 3 MI AT 7500 MSL HDG TOWARDS US. AS THE AIRPLANE (TARGET) CLOSED TCASII TARGET CHANGED TO YELLOW AND ISSUED WARNING 'TFC'. THEN TCASII INDICATED TARGET CLBING TO APPROX 7700 FT AND SHORTLY THEREAFTER BEGAN GIVING CLB INSTRUCTIONS AS TARGET BECAME RED. RA, WE CLBED ABOUT 400 FT TO 8400 AND TFC PASSED OFF L WING. TFC WAS NEVER SEEN BY EITHER CREW MEMBER. OTHER PLANE WAS SMA AND WX WAS HIGH SCATTERED AND VISIBILITY WAS RESTR TO 3 MI DUE TO HAZE. AFTER TFC CLRED WE DSNDED BACK TO 8000 FT.
