Narrative:
Over tar river VOR left engine strut overheat light illuminated, after running 'strut overheat light on' checklist. We determined #1 engine needed to be shut down. ATC was notified and we left FL370 for FL240. We shut down engine in accordance with 'engine shutdown in-flight' checklist. ATC and company were notified. Once on approach control (new york) we declared emergency due to congestion and flight patterns at newark. We ran all normal checklists including '1 engine inoperative approach and landing' checklist and made a normal approach and landing at newark international airport. The shutdown occurred on flight from fll to ewr.
