Narrative:
Climbing out from modesto airport on scheduled flight, we were on vectors to intercept the mod 245 degree radial. Around 6000 ft to 6500 ft MSL, the stockton controller said that we had traffic at our 10-11 O'clock, I did not hear the rest, because at this time I was making a rapid movement to miss an small aircraft that was at our altitude and within 100 ft from us. If the controller had not given us this call, I believe there would have been a midair. My only concern was why the call did not come sooner. Supplemental information from acn 188417: on climb out from modesto had just completed memory items or flow on after takeoff checklist and was reading checklist to ensure it was complete. I looked and saw we were on what looked to be a collision course with an small aircraft converging from the left. I immediately grabbed the control yoke and pulled into a steeper climb to overfly the small aircraft. The flight attendant fell to the floor from the sudden increase in G force. Contributing to our not seeing the small aircraft sooner was being on a new route and following a new checklist procedure which now calls for shutting down the auxiliary power unit out of 5000 ft. Except for a scare, the system did work. The controller did his job and we did ours.

Narrative: CLBING OUT FROM MODESTO ARPT ON SCHEDULED FLT, WE WERE ON VECTORS TO INTERCEPT THE MOD 245 DEG RADIAL. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 188417: ON CLB OUT FROM MODESTO HAD JUST COMPLETED MEMORY ITEMS OR FLOW ON AFTER TKOF CHKLIST AND WAS READING CHKLIST TO ENSURE IT WAS COMPLETE. I LOOKED AND SAW WE WERE ON WHAT LOOKED TO BE A COLLISION COURSE WITH AN SMA CONVERGING FROM THE L. I IMMEDIATELY GRABBED THE CTL YOKE AND PULLED INTO A STEEPER CLB TO OVERFLY THE SMA. THE FLT ATTENDANT FELL TO THE FLOOR FROM THE SUDDEN INCREASE IN G FORCE. CONTRIBUTING TO OUR NOT SEEING THE SMA SOONER WAS BEING ON A NEW RTE AND FOLLOWING A NEW CHKLIST PROC WHICH NOW CALLS FOR SHUTTING DOWN THE AUX PWR UNIT OUT OF 5000 FT. EXCEPT FOR A SCARE, THE SYS DID WORK. THE CTLR DID HIS JOB AND WE DID OURS.
