Narrative:
I was giving a student pilot instruction at night to fulfill the 3 hour min requirement for private pilot applicants. We made a flight from cleveland cuyahoga county airport (cgf) to akron-canton regional (cak). Our intentions were to do 3 takeoffs and lndgs at cak and proceed west to mansfield lahm (mfd). Tower controller had us to our first touch- and-G0 on runway 5. The active runways were, according to ATIS, 1 and 5. On our upwind leg I turned off the instrument panel lights to simulate a loss of that equipment, the tower then cleared us to land on runway 1. Instead of landing on runway 1 we did our touch-and-go on runway 32. The problem was caused by our failure to align ourselves with the proper runway. The fact that we had a dark instrument panel contributed to this error. In the future I'll have to be much more cautious while doing this with a student pilot especially at airports that I'm not familiar with at night.

Title: WRONG RWY APCH LNDG.
Narrative: I WAS GIVING A STUDENT PLT INSTRUCTION AT NIGHT TO FULFILL THE 3 HR MIN REQUIREMENT FOR PRIVATE PLT APPLICANTS. WE MADE A FLT FROM CLEVELAND CUYAHOGA COUNTY ARPT (CGF) TO AKRON-CANTON REGIONAL (CAK). OUR INTENTIONS WERE TO DO 3 TKOFS AND LNDGS AT CAK AND PROCEED W TO MANSFIELD LAHM (MFD). TWR CTLR HAD US TO OUR FIRST TOUCH- AND-G0 ON RWY 5. THE ACTIVE RWYS WERE, ACCORDING TO ATIS, 1 AND 5. ON OUR UPWIND LEG I TURNED OFF THE INST PANEL LIGHTS TO SIMULATE A LOSS OF THAT EQUIP, THE TWR THEN CLRED US TO LAND ON RWY 1. INSTEAD OF LNDG ON RWY 1 WE DID OUR TOUCH-AND-GO ON RWY 32. THE PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY OUR FAILURE TO ALIGN OURSELVES WITH THE PROPER RWY. THE FACT THAT WE HAD A DARK INST PANEL CONTRIBUTED TO THIS ERROR. IN THE FUTURE I'LL HAVE TO BE MUCH MORE CAUTIOUS WHILE DOING THIS WITH A STUDENT PLT ESPECIALLY AT ARPTS THAT I'M NOT FAMILIAR WITH AT NIGHT.
