Narrative:
On returning from nantucket (ack) VFR to dayton, oh, with a stop in johnstown, PA, we encountered an alternator failure. Departed ack arrived johnstown, PA. Encountered radio failure en route. Unable to transmit, limited navigation function. Called WX (FSS) and briefed on VFR condition on remainder of flight. Opted for VFR return to day by pilotage/limited radio use. Encountered inadvertent IFR in rain/fog in wheeling. Climbed to 12500 to top system, squawking code 7700/7600 intermittently. Unable to top WX. Shot approach at zanesville with remaining radio function. Conditions at arrival 2000 overcast 2-3 mi in rain. Drove home.
