Narrative:

After departing cyyz, I was told to hold a 240 degree heading for the xqo 060 degree radial inbound. I remained in heading select instead of arming LNAV on the MCP. After crossing the 240 degree course into yqo, the first officer asked the controller if he wanted us to intercept the course. He said yes that is what we were cleared. We then intercepted the course. To prevent this misunderstanding the controller should state 'hold 240 degree heading to intercept the yqo 060 degree radial inbound', then flight plan route.
