Narrative:
Aircraft contacted approach control and told to expect ILS 27R which is normal for la grange arrival with 27L closed. Shortly thereafter, approach vectored aircraft to north side of katl and told to expect ILS 26R. Just prior to base leg, approach was changed back to ILS 27R with descent south of approachs north 26R. Aircraft was at 6000 ft, 210 KTS assigned. Aircraft was vectored to heading of 210 and then 270 to intercept localizer, descend to 2800 ft, speed 180 KTS to OM. Aircraft was just prior to hokie when clearance was received and well over 2 dots above GS. Aircraft was configured for landing to expedite descent. A switch to tower was made who said speed was good and to expect 2 departures prior to arrival. Aircraft began to slow to stabilize approach when tower queried about airspeed just prior to OM. Then we cancelled approach clearance and a miss was executed. Normal approach and landing followed. Approach clearance was in question, aircraft was IMC and approach control said to expect clearance at marker (ie, visual approach). Coming from north side of atl, spacing with other aircraft for 27R was not known.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF MLG RUSHED ON APCH WITH TOO HIGH SPD AND ABOVE GS WAS INSTRUCTED TO MAKE A MISSED APCH PROC.
Narrative: ACFT CONTACTED APCH CTL AND TOLD TO EXPECT ILS 27R WHICH IS NORMAL FOR LA GRANGE ARR WITH 27L CLOSED. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, APCH VECTORED ACFT TO N SIDE OF KATL AND TOLD TO EXPECT ILS 26R. JUST PRIOR TO BASE LEG, APCH WAS CHANGED BACK TO ILS 27R WITH DSCNT S OF APCHS N 26R. ACFT WAS AT 6000 FT, 210 KTS ASSIGNED. ACFT WAS VECTORED TO HDG OF 210 AND THEN 270 TO INTERCEPT LOC, DSND TO 2800 FT, SPD 180 KTS TO OM. ACFT WAS JUST PRIOR TO HOKIE WHEN CLRNC WAS RECEIVED AND WELL OVER 2 DOTS ABOVE GS. ACFT WAS CONFIGURED FOR LNDG TO EXPEDITE DSCNT. A SWITCH TO TWR WAS MADE WHO SAID SPD WAS GOOD AND TO EXPECT 2 DEPS PRIOR TO ARR. ACFT BEGAN TO SLOW TO STABILIZE APCH WHEN TWR QUERIED ABOUT AIRSPD JUST PRIOR TO OM. THEN WE CANCELLED APCH CLRNC AND A MISS WAS EXECUTED. NORMAL APCH AND LNDG FOLLOWED. APCH CLRNC WAS IN QUESTION, ACFT WAS IMC AND APCH CTL SAID TO EXPECT CLRNC AT MARKER (IE, VISUAL APCH). COMING FROM N SIDE OF ATL, SPACING WITH OTHER ACFT FOR 27R WAS NOT KNOWN.
