Narrative:
Mci departure assigned us 030 heading and 7000 ft. Then, after level off at 7000 ft, they called traffic at 7000 ft opposite direction. We picked up traffic on TCASII and figured ATC was going to provide lateral separation. Wrong! They then turned the medium large transport toward us and gave us a turn toward them. We are now less than 4 mi (TCASII). We began an immediate descent to 6000 ft as the controller told us to maintain 6000. Controller went about his business as if nothing unusual had happened. We had a TCASII TA alert only we didn't stick around to see if it was going to RA.
