Narrative:
Just as we were given clearance to climb, we were distracted by the TCASII audio alert. I dialed in the altitude I heard we were cleared to and continued to observe the intruder on the TCASII screen. I thought we were going to '11' but the controller had apparently said '10'. The TCASII alert was around 7000 and the indications were that he was quite close. The TCASII alert was poorly timed and there has to be a less intrusive method for the alert. Our being at '11' rather than '10' caused no near miss nor was anyone displayed on the TCASII other than the lower altitude problem. Supplemental information from acn 191182: this error was a result of the misset altitude selector and failure of all 3 crew members to note same, mostly due to distrs of CDU confusion, frequency change and traffic watch.

Title: ACR WDB ALTDEV OVERSHOT DURING CLB OUT FROM EWR.
Narrative: JUST AS WE WERE GIVEN CLRNC TO CLB, WE WERE DISTRACTED BY THE TCASII AUDIO ALERT. I DIALED IN THE ALT I HEARD WE WERE CLRED TO AND CONTINUED TO OBSERVE THE INTRUDER ON THE TCASII SCREEN. I THOUGHT WE WERE GOING TO '11' BUT THE CTLR HAD APPARENTLY SAID '10'. THE TCASII ALERT WAS AROUND 7000 AND THE INDICATIONS WERE THAT HE WAS QUITE CLOSE. THE TCASII ALERT WAS POORLY TIMED AND THERE HAS TO BE A LESS INTRUSIVE METHOD FOR THE ALERT. OUR BEING AT '11' RATHER THAN '10' CAUSED NO NEAR MISS NOR WAS ANYONE DISPLAYED ON THE TCASII OTHER THAN THE LOWER ALT PROBLEM. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 191182: THIS ERROR WAS A RESULT OF THE MISSET ALT SELECTOR AND FAILURE OF ALL 3 CREW MEMBERS TO NOTE SAME, MOSTLY DUE TO DISTRS OF CDU CONFUSION, FREQ CHANGE AND TFC WATCH.
