Narrative:

Aircraft had just reached FL350. Power set. Felt slight airframe vibration. Notice fluctuating fuel flow. Then noticed (#1 engine) fluctuations in other engine instruments on #1 engine. Heard a muffled bang. Reduced power to approximately 70 percent N2 on #1 engine. #1 stabilized. Elected to shut down #1 and proceed to denver. Flight to denver uneventful. Descended to FL280. Supplemental information from acn 191947. Consultation with company flight control/dispatch resulted in an encouragement to 'press on' to den. The captain agreed that it could be done safely and asked for our input. (The WX was clear and fuel adequate). The so recommended going back. I agreed that we could make denver safely but dfw was right there and iah was closer than den. I also told him to go on in a similar situation and they were not praised for their decision.
