Narrative:

After taxiing away from the gate another aircraft reported to ground control they saw smoke from our left engine. We had no indication in the cockpit. We motored engine and had maintenance and a fire extinguisher brought out and sprayed engine. Passenger were deplaned through forward cabin door with stair truck. Aircraft towed to maintenance.

Narrative: AFTER TAXIING AWAY FROM THE GATE ANOTHER ACFT RPTED TO GND CTL THEY SAW SMOKE FROM OUR L ENG. WE HAD NO INDICATION IN THE COCKPIT.
