Narrative:

The copilot landed on runway 22R at ord, with rain and thunderstorms in the immediate area. I took control of the aircraft after the copilot slowed the jet and observed a widebody transport to my right on runway 9L (an intersecting runway) moving towards us. I stopped the aircraft on the runway short of 9L and asked the copilot to confirm that we were cleared to cross 9L. He tried to call the tower twice but communication was blocked by other aircraft. The tower then instructed the aircraft following me on approach to 22R to go around. He went around. The taxi route from the terminal to takeoff on runway 14L, with a portion of the route on runway 9L caused part of the problem. The tower was very busy and instructions were not given to cross runway 9L or expedite off the runway. Supplemental information from acn 192879: we did not receive instructions from tower on how to depart runway 22R and there was an air carrier B aircraft taxiing down 9L. The first officer asked tower where he wanted us to depart the runway at and tower replied to company B on final. Our call sign was company a. The first officer again asked tower for instructions and empathized. Company a following this radio call to tower, tower's next transmission was for company B to go around. Some of the contributing factors in the cockpit leading to this situation was the exchange of aircraft control on rollout and then having the first officer attempting to communicate with tower toward the end of the runway. Next, is the experience level of the captain and first officer. The captain was qualified in march and the first officer in june of this yr. Therefore, each pilot was relatively inexperienced and did not foresee the need to get instructions on clearing the runway earlier and not being positionally aware of the aircraft behind us requiring to land and the tight spacing O'hare tower was using to land aircraft. Tower's next comment when asked where he wanted us to taxi was the sarcastic remark 'turn right, turn left, I don't care, just get off the runway.' it may have been that they were under considerable stress due to the thunderstorms and heavy traffic that they neglected to provide us with some of the more apparent informational needs.

Title: ACR ON LNDG ROLLOUT SEES WDB ON INTERSECTING RWY. HOLDS.

Narrative: THE COPLT LANDED ON RWY 22R AT ORD, WITH RAIN AND TSTMS IN THE IMMEDIATE AREA. I TOOK CTL OF THE ACFT AFTER THE COPLT SLOWED THE JET AND OBSERVED A WDB TO MY R ON RWY 9L (AN INTERSECTING RWY) MOVING TOWARDS US. I STOPPED THE ACFT ON THE RWY SHORT OF 9L AND ASKED THE COPLT TO CONFIRM THAT WE WERE CLRED TO CROSS 9L. HE TRIED TO CALL THE TWR TWICE BUT COM WAS BLOCKED BY OTHER ACFT. THE TWR THEN INSTRUCTED THE ACFT FOLLOWING ME ON APCH TO 22R TO GAR. HE WENT AROUND. THE TAXI RTE FROM THE TERMINAL TO TKOF ON RWY 14L, WITH A PORTION OF THE RTE ON RWY 9L CAUSED PART OF THE PROBLEM. THE TWR WAS VERY BUSY AND INSTRUCTIONS WERE NOT GIVEN TO CROSS RWY 9L OR EXPEDITE OFF THE RWY. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 192879: WE DID NOT RECEIVE INSTRUCTIONS FROM TWR ON HOW TO DEPART RWY 22R AND THERE WAS AN ACR B ACFT TAXIING DOWN 9L. THE FO ASKED TWR WHERE HE WANTED US TO DEPART THE RWY AT AND TWR REPLIED TO COMPANY B ON FINAL. OUR CALL SIGN WAS COMPANY A. THE FO AGAIN ASKED TWR FOR INSTRUCTIONS AND EMPATHIZED. COMPANY A FOLLOWING THIS RADIO CALL TO TWR, TWR'S NEXT XMISSION WAS FOR COMPANY B TO GAR. SOME OF THE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS IN THE COCKPIT LEADING TO THIS SITUATION WAS THE EXCHANGE OF ACFT CTL ON ROLLOUT AND THEN HAVING THE FO ATTEMPTING TO COMMUNICATE WITH TWR TOWARD THE END OF THE RWY. NEXT, IS THE EXPERIENCE LEVEL OF THE CAPT AND FO. THE CAPT WAS QUALIFIED IN MARCH AND THE FO IN JUNE OF THIS YR. THEREFORE, EACH PLT WAS RELATIVELY INEXPERIENCED AND DID NOT FORESEE THE NEED TO GET INSTRUCTIONS ON CLRING THE RWY EARLIER AND NOT BEING POSITIONALLY AWARE OF THE ACFT BEHIND US REQUIRING TO LAND AND THE TIGHT SPACING O'HARE TWR WAS USING TO LAND ACFT. TWR'S NEXT COMMENT WHEN ASKED WHERE HE WANTED US TO TAXI WAS THE SARCASTIC REMARK 'TURN R, TURN L, I DON'T CARE, JUST GET OFF THE RWY.' IT MAY HAVE BEEN THAT THEY WERE UNDER CONSIDERABLE STRESS DUE TO THE TSTMS AND HVY TFC THAT THEY NEGLECTED TO PROVIDE US WITH SOME OF THE MORE APPARENT INFORMATIONAL NEEDS.
