Narrative:

During preflight of dfw-nrt on nov/fri/91, an FAA type visited the aircraft checking out the logbooks. There was 1 deferred item involving an interphone handset located at door 1R. The cradle was broken and a new part was needed. Item was signed off using an MEL reference number as a deferred item. The interphone actually was operable. The FAA person questioned the sign off made by maintenance.

Title: RAMP CHK BY FAA ACI RAISES A QUESTION OF LEGALITY REGARDING THE LOGBOOK SIGN OFF BY AIRLINE MAINT PROC OF ACFT EQUIP PROBLEM AS REFERRED TO IN THE MEL REQUIREMENTS.

Narrative: DURING PREFLT OF DFW-NRT ON NOV/FRI/91, AN FAA TYPE VISITED THE ACFT CHKING OUT THE LOGBOOKS. THERE WAS 1 DEFERRED ITEM INVOLVING AN INTERPHONE HANDSET LOCATED AT DOOR 1R. THE CRADLE WAS BROKEN AND A NEW PART WAS NEEDED. ITEM WAS SIGNED OFF USING AN MEL REF NUMBER AS A DEFERRED ITEM. THE INTERPHONE ACTUALLY WAS OPERABLE. THE FAA PERSON QUESTIONED THE SIGN OFF MADE BY MAINT.
