Bangor approach remote: 'hold for release.' pilot, copilot heard: 'cleared for departure.' aircraft departed and reported airborne. Approach reported IMC traffic 1 mi ahead at 1500 ft. No evasive action. Believe we passed under the traffic. Potential midair. Controller had both aircraft on radar. Controller reported we were not cleared for departure. Case of hearing what crew wanted to hear.
