Narrative:
Medium large transport X on final cleared to land runway 14 sarasota. Small aircraft Y on left downwind runway 14 sarasota sequenced #2 to follow medium large transport X. The small aircraft Y traffic was no factor and pointed out to medium large transport X. The captain of medium large transport X initiated a go around due to TCASII alert. The cause of this occurrence is the flight crew of medium large transport X responding only to the TCASII alert and not trusting the local controller. To prevent this situation from recurring flcs should be educated not to overreact to a TCASII alert in an airport traffic pattern, but listen to and trust the controller. If every flight crew reacts to a TCASII alert in an air traffic area traffic pattern as this one did, mass confusion will reign.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MLG GIVEN SMA AS TFC ON DOWNWIND, BUT OVERREACTS TO TCASII ALERT AND MAKES A MISSED APCH GAR.
Narrative: MLG X ON FINAL CLRED TO LAND RWY 14 SARASOTA. SMA Y ON L DOWNWIND RWY 14 SARASOTA SEQUENCED #2 TO FOLLOW MLG X. THE SMA Y TFC WAS NO FACTOR AND POINTED OUT TO MLG X. THE CAPT OF MLG X INITIATED A GAR DUE TO TCASII ALERT. THE CAUSE OF THIS OCCURRENCE IS THE FLC OF MLG X RESPONDING ONLY TO THE TCASII ALERT AND NOT TRUSTING THE LCL CTLR. TO PREVENT THIS SITUATION FROM RECURRING FLCS SHOULD BE EDUCATED NOT TO OVERREACT TO A TCASII ALERT IN AN ARPT TFC PATTERN, BUT LISTEN TO AND TRUST THE CTLR. IF EVERY FLC REACTS TO A TCASII ALERT IN AN ATA TFC PATTERN AS THIS ONE DID, MASS CONFUSION WILL REIGN.
