Narrative:

Flight was level at assigned altitude of 11000 ft. When approach control informed us of known opposite direction traffic at 2 O'clock climbing to 10000 ft, which we then had in visual contact. Although the other aircraft was only climbing to 10000 ft, and we were still at 11000 ft it triggered a short duration climb advisory on our TCASII. Apparently because it (TCASII) anticipated that the other aircraft would continue its climb rather than leveling off at 10000 ft we initiated a climb based on TCASII as per company policy. The RA was very short and thus the deviation was only slight. Approach control was advised, we returned to normal flight path and continued with normal approach and landing. Comment: although the RA was apparently unnecessary and that there was no violation and no known actual conflict or other problem, am submitting this report for your information anyway.

Original NASA ASRS Text

Title: ACR WDB ALTDEV EXCURSION FROM CLRNC ALT IN RESPONSE TO TCASII RA.

Narrative: FLT WAS LEVEL AT ASSIGNED ALT OF 11000 FT. WHEN APCH CTL INFORMED US OF KNOWN OPPOSITE DIRECTION TFC AT 2 O'CLOCK CLBING TO 10000 FT, WHICH WE THEN HAD IN VISUAL CONTACT. ALTHOUGH THE OTHER ACFT WAS ONLY CLBING TO 10000 FT, AND WE WERE STILL AT 11000 FT IT TRIGGERED A SHORT DURATION CLB ADVISORY ON OUR TCASII. APPARENTLY BECAUSE IT (TCASII) ANTICIPATED THAT THE OTHER ACFT WOULD CONTINUE ITS CLB RATHER THAN LEVELING OFF AT 10000 FT WE INITIATED A CLB BASED ON TCASII AS PER COMPANY POLICY. THE RA WAS VERY SHORT AND THUS THE DEV WAS ONLY SLIGHT. APCH CTL WAS ADVISED, WE RETURNED TO NORMAL FLT PATH AND CONTINUED WITH NORMAL APCH AND LNDG. COMMENT: ALTHOUGH THE RA WAS APPARENTLY UNNECESSARY AND THAT THERE WAS NO VIOLATION AND NO KNOWN ACTUAL CONFLICT OR OTHER PROBLEM, AM SUBMITTING THIS RPT FOR YOUR INFO ANYWAY.
