Narrative:
Widebody transport flight from anchorage to san francisco, cleared golden gate 2 arrival to cross lester intersection 11000 ft/250 KTS. Switched to sfo approach control 8 NM prior to sfo VOR. Cleared by approach to turn left to 90 degrees, descend to 6000 ft to 4000 ft. Notified us of traffic for runway 28L, 12-1 O'clock, 8 mi, cleared for a visual. Flight conditions clear, good forward visibility, dusk. Hard to pick out other aircraft in lights of town. Slowed aircraft to 170 KTS in descent south of san mateo bridge with other aircraft in sight. Started a right turn in for runway 28R. Realized rate of turn would cross centerline of 28R. Increased bank angle to 35/40 to increase rate of turn. Strong winds at altitude, approximately 350/20-30 KTS. Rolled out on approach 3500 altitude above and behind other aircraft on 28L. Corrected to 28R centerline. Drift angle on final 8 degrees left. Winds reported by tower on ground 290/10 KTS. Normal approach from then on. Aircraft landed 28L ahead. Captain flying flight approach control position aircraft too close to centerline of 28R for normal rate turn for a visual approach to 28R. Strong winds at altitude were not compensated for by approach in placing aircraft for turn in.

Title: WDB FLC GIVEN SLAM DUNK VISUAL AT SFO OVERSHOT RWY ALIGNMENT.
Narrative: WDB FLT FROM ANCHORAGE TO SAN FRANCISCO, CLRED GOLDEN GATE 2 ARR TO CROSS LESTER INTXN 11000 FT/250 KTS. SWITCHED TO SFO APCH CTL 8 NM PRIOR TO SFO VOR. CLRED BY APCH TO TURN L TO 90 DEGS, DSND TO 6000 FT TO 4000 FT. NOTIFIED US OF TFC FOR RWY 28L, 12-1 O'CLOCK, 8 MI, CLRED FOR A VISUAL. FLT CONDITIONS CLR, GOOD FORWARD VISIBILITY, DUSK. HARD TO PICK OUT OTHER ACFT IN LIGHTS OF TOWN. SLOWED ACFT TO 170 KTS IN DSCNT S OF SAN MATEO BRIDGE WITH OTHER ACFT IN SIGHT. STARTED A R TURN IN FOR RWY 28R. REALIZED RATE OF TURN WOULD CROSS CENTERLINE OF 28R. INCREASED BANK ANGLE TO 35/40 TO INCREASE RATE OF TURN. STRONG WINDS AT ALT, APPROX 350/20-30 KTS. ROLLED OUT ON APCH 3500 ALT ABOVE AND BEHIND OTHER ACFT ON 28L. CORRECTED TO 28R CENTERLINE. DRIFT ANGLE ON FINAL 8 DEGS L. WINDS RPTED BY TWR ON GND 290/10 KTS. NORMAL APCH FROM THEN ON. ACFT LANDED 28L AHEAD. CAPT FLYING FLT APCH CTL POS ACFT TOO CLOSE TO CENTERLINE OF 28R FOR NORMAL RATE TURN FOR A VISUAL APCH TO 28R. STRONG WINDS AT ALT WERE NOT COMPENSATED FOR BY APCH IN PLACING ACFT FOR TURN IN.
