Narrative:
We lost #1 engine at 500 ft AGL due to #2 main tire tread failure. The separated piece of tread was ingested by the #1 (pod) engine. Cleanup and checklist operation was by the book, no incident. Emergency declared and 37000 pounds of fuel dumped. We landed uneventfully and taxied to the gate. On preflight the tire looked great. I don't know what could've been done to prevent this expensive and dangerous situation. Supplemental information from acn 195905: assistance provided by: aircraft holding for takeoff which alerted us to impending problem by advising us that something 'fell off' airplane during takeoff roll.
