Narrative:
Our medium large transport X was cleared visual approach to 18L at hsv. Requested 18R as ILS 18L was OTS and 18L last 1000 ft was unusable. Approach stated 'request 18R with the tower.' huntsville tower cleared us for visual 18L, our aircraft intercepted final approach for 18L, tower then stated 'traffic 3 mi right base for 18L.' traffic was constant bearing decreasing range. Traffic then confirmed with tower, 'understand we're cleared 18L?' tower stated cleared 18L. We leveled off as the conflicting aircraft continued descent and intercept of 18L final. Tower then notified us to 'expect west vector.' as the aircraft passed underneath us (greater than 500 ft) tower cleared us for 18R and apologized for the confusion/conflict. After an uneventful landing the captain called the tower to clarify what actually transpired and was assured that the problem would be taken care of. In retrospect options were to wave off conflicting traffic, wave our approach or clear conflicting traffic to 18R. Tower was unaware of the conflict when we were cleared for 18L. We were unable until approximately 4 mi out.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MLG ON VISUAL APCH TO RWY 18L HAD TO GIVE WAY TO ANOTHER ACFT TURNING FINAL FOR THE SAME RWY. TWR FINALLY GAVE MLG THE PARALLEL RWY FOR LNDG.
Narrative: OUR MLG X WAS CLRED VISUAL APCH TO 18L AT HSV. REQUESTED 18R AS ILS 18L WAS OTS AND 18L LAST 1000 FT WAS UNUSABLE. APCH STATED 'REQUEST 18R WITH THE TWR.' HUNTSVILLE TWR CLRED US FOR VISUAL 18L, OUR ACFT INTERCEPTED FINAL APCH FOR 18L, TWR THEN STATED 'TFC 3 MI R BASE FOR 18L.' TFC WAS CONSTANT BEARING DECREASING RANGE. TFC THEN CONFIRMED WITH TWR, 'UNDERSTAND WE'RE CLRED 18L?' TWR STATED CLRED 18L. WE LEVELED OFF AS THE CONFLICTING ACFT CONTINUED DSCNT AND INTERCEPT OF 18L FINAL. TWR THEN NOTIFIED US TO 'EXPECT W VECTOR.' AS THE ACFT PASSED UNDERNEATH US (GREATER THAN 500 FT) TWR CLRED US FOR 18R AND APOLOGIZED FOR THE CONFUSION/CONFLICT. AFTER AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG THE CAPT CALLED THE TWR TO CLARIFY WHAT ACTUALLY TRANSPIRED AND WAS ASSURED THAT THE PROBLEM WOULD BE TAKEN CARE OF. IN RETROSPECT OPTIONS WERE TO WAVE OFF CONFLICTING TFC, WAVE OUR APCH OR CLR CONFLICTING TFC TO 18R. TWR WAS UNAWARE OF THE CONFLICT WHEN WE WERE CLRED FOR 18L. WE WERE UNABLE UNTIL APPROX 4 MI OUT.
