Narrative:

Air carrier X, widebody transport, was cleared for takeoff at ewr runway 22R ewr 4 departure. We were preceded by air carrier Y, medium large transport. Ewr tower cleared us for takeoff immediately after air carrier Y flight was airborne. We were flying a very light widebody transport. Our performance was such that at 4500 ft the departure controller wanted us to level at 4500, instead of 5000 as cleared on the ewr 4 departure. Evidently we had outclbed air carrier Y ahead of us and we had a visual sighting of the aircraft ahead of us probably less than 1 NM distance. We were able to level our aircraft at 4800 ft. We were given a north heading 360 degrees. Air carrier Y continued swbound and as the 2 aircraft separated further we were given clearance to 6000. No further conflict. We were given clearance to takeoff too close behind a lesser performing aircraft. In the future I should advise the tower of our performance and ask if applicable for a short delay in takeoff clearance.

Title: ACR X OVERTAKES ACR Y AFTER DEP, HAD LTSS. SYS ERROR.

Narrative: ACR X, WDB, WAS CLRED FOR TKOF AT EWR RWY 22R EWR 4 DEP. WE WERE PRECEDED BY ACR Y, MLG. EWR TWR CLRED US FOR TKOF IMMEDIATELY AFTER ACR Y FLT WAS AIRBORNE. WE WERE FLYING A VERY LIGHT WDB. OUR PERFORMANCE WAS SUCH THAT AT 4500 FT THE DEP CTLR WANTED US TO LEVEL AT 4500, INSTEAD OF 5000 AS CLRED ON THE EWR 4 DEP. EVIDENTLY WE HAD OUTCLBED ACR Y AHEAD OF US AND WE HAD A VISUAL SIGHTING OF THE ACFT AHEAD OF US PROBABLY LESS THAN 1 NM DISTANCE. WE WERE ABLE TO LEVEL OUR ACFT AT 4800 FT. WE WERE GIVEN A N HDG 360 DEGS. ACR Y CONTINUED SWBOUND AND AS THE 2 ACFT SEPARATED FURTHER WE WERE GIVEN CLRNC TO 6000. NO FURTHER CONFLICT. WE WERE GIVEN CLRNC TO TKOF TOO CLOSE BEHIND A LESSER PERFORMING ACFT. IN THE FUTURE I SHOULD ADVISE THE TWR OF OUR PERFORMANCE AND ASK IF APPLICABLE FOR A SHORT DELAY IN TKOF CLRNC.
