Narrative:
Landing runway 27 boston, after clear of runway, instructed to hold short of 22R. Holding short of 22R, changed to ground control frequency (apparently mistakenly) and informed controller we had cleared runway 27, was instructed by ground controller to 'cross and turn right on the outer to gate', crossed 22R and noticed lights of aircraft at takeoff end of 22R (1 1/2 mi northeast). Discussion, at ground controller's request, with watch supervisor after gate arrival informed us that the aircraft lights at takeoff end of 22R were those of an aircraft that was cleared for takeoff. We should have obtained crossing clearance from the 22R local controller (different from 27 controller) and ground controller, we believe, mistook us for an air carrier Y that had just crossed 22R and in error cleared us to taxi to our gate. Why, oh why, does boston use 2 local controllers to handle runway xings? Do they not talk to each other as they stand side-by-side?
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR LGT UNAUTHORIZED RWY XING AT BOS AFTER LNDG.
Narrative: LNDG RWY 27 BOSTON, AFTER CLR OF RWY, INSTRUCTED TO HOLD SHORT OF 22R. HOLDING SHORT OF 22R, CHANGED TO GND CTL FREQ (APPARENTLY MISTAKENLY) AND INFORMED CTLR WE HAD CLRED RWY 27, WAS INSTRUCTED BY GND CTLR TO 'CROSS AND TURN R ON THE OUTER TO GATE', CROSSED 22R AND NOTICED LIGHTS OF ACFT AT TKOF END OF 22R (1 1/2 MI NE). DISCUSSION, AT GND CTLR'S REQUEST, WITH WATCH SUPVR AFTER GATE ARR INFORMED US THAT THE ACFT LIGHTS AT TKOF END OF 22R WERE THOSE OF AN ACFT THAT WAS CLRED FOR TKOF. WE SHOULD HAVE OBTAINED XING CLRNC FROM THE 22R LCL CTLR (DIFFERENT FROM 27 CTLR) AND GND CTLR, WE BELIEVE, MISTOOK US FOR AN ACR Y THAT HAD JUST CROSSED 22R AND IN ERROR CLRED US TO TAXI TO OUR GATE. WHY, OH WHY, DOES BOSTON USE 2 LCL CTLRS TO HANDLE RWY XINGS? DO THEY NOT TALK TO EACH OTHER AS THEY STAND SIDE-BY-SIDE?
