Narrative:
Outbound on 120 degree heading from psp VOR at 5000 ft when ATC told a single engine aircraft departing from kpsp, to reverse course so that an inbound medium large transport (us) could descend to 4000 ft. The single engine aircraft turned and climbed toward us which initially gave TA indications on our TCASII, then followed with an RA. The controller asked why we climbed to 5500 ft after the TCASII RA and we responded that we had experienced an RA and close in visual at 12 O'clock, 1/2 mi. The last RA indications we saw were 5 climb.
