Narrative:
Operating from an uncontrolled field, I like to keep fresh on procedure in control areas by performing touch-and-goes in the local TRSA at mbs airfield. During my initial call-up to approach control, I informed them of my intentions to perform two touch-and-goes. I received my transponder code and everything continued as usual. I was turned over to tower and then received a clearance to land. Now, when a pilot has practiced something and expects to hear the correct responses, he usually ends up hearing what he wants to hear. I interpreted the clearance to land as clearance to proceed with my touch-and-go. After I had lifted off and was approaching 200 AGL, the tower informed me that I had not received clearance. For a touch-and-go but only clearance for a full stop landing. Expecting clearance for the touch-and-go, that is exactly how I interpreted the controller giving me clearance to land. I feel that the controller, knowing I was expecting to do a touch-and-go but yet not giving me clearance to do so, should have told me plainly that I would not be able to carry out my intentions.

Title: SMA EXECUTES UNAUTHORIZED TOUCH-AND-GO AT MBS WHEN CLRED ONLY TO LAND.
Narrative: OPERATING FROM AN UNCTLED FIELD, I LIKE TO KEEP FRESH ON PROC IN CTL AREAS BY PERFORMING TOUCH-AND-GOES IN THE LCL TRSA AT MBS AIRFIELD. DURING MY INITIAL CALL-UP TO APCH CTL, I INFORMED THEM OF MY INTENTIONS TO PERFORM TWO TOUCH-AND-GOES. I RECEIVED MY TRANSPONDER CODE AND EVERYTHING CONTINUED AS USUAL. I WAS TURNED OVER TO TWR AND THEN RECEIVED A CLRNC TO LAND. NOW, WHEN A PLT HAS PRACTICED SOMETHING AND EXPECTS TO HEAR THE CORRECT RESPONSES, HE USUALLY ENDS UP HEARING WHAT HE WANTS TO HEAR. I INTERPRETED THE CLRNC TO LAND AS CLRNC TO PROCEED WITH MY TOUCH-AND-GO. AFTER I HAD LIFTED OFF AND WAS APCHING 200 AGL, THE TWR INFORMED ME THAT I HAD NOT RECEIVED CLRNC. FOR A TOUCH-AND-GO BUT ONLY CLRNC FOR A FULL STOP LNDG. EXPECTING CLRNC FOR THE TOUCH-AND-GO, THAT IS EXACTLY HOW I INTERPRETED THE CTLR GIVING ME CLRNC TO LAND. I FEEL THAT THE CTLR, KNOWING I WAS EXPECTING TO DO A TOUCH-AND-GO BUT YET NOT GIVING ME CLRNC TO DO SO, SHOULD HAVE TOLD ME PLAINLY THAT I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO CARRY OUT MY INTENTIONS.
