Narrative:
On a practice instrument approach to bur, while executing the ILS runway 8 approach, I took off without a departure clearance. Tower's instructions had been 'cleared to land.' I executed a touch-and-go. An air carrier aircraft holding on runway 15 had his takeoff clearance canceled and was held for a few additional mins. The problem arose when we requested a touch-and-go and an ILS to vny after that. Socal approach advised that he had our request and that due to traffic and low IFR, we may need to land and refile. He would keep us advised. We were taken off the localizer once to let an A300 get in and then turned back onto the localizer. We were then shipped off to tower. A friend was in the right seat working the radios. I was a little busy staying on the ILS, so I sort of remember tower clearing us to land. After a near perfect ILS and a squeaker of a smooth landing, I smartly advanced the throttle to go around. About 50 ft off the ground, the tower asked us if we had received our clearance. Our collective reaction at that point (in the plane) was 'oh &%$#.' fortunately, the controller canceled the air carrier's aircraft clearance and gave us missed approach instructions and handed us off to approach. Moral of the story: on a practice approach, listen to the type of clearance 'land, touch/go option, etc.' don't get caught up by habit.

Title: A C172 CFI PERFORMS AN UNAUTH TOUCH-AND-GO WHEN THE FLT HAD ONLY BEEN CLRED TO LAND AT VNY, CA.
Narrative: ON A PRACTICE INST APCH TO BUR, WHILE EXECUTING THE ILS RWY 8 APCH, I TOOK OFF WITHOUT A DEP CLRNC. TWR'S INSTRUCTIONS HAD BEEN 'CLRED TO LAND.' I EXECUTED A TOUCH-AND-GO. AN ACR ACFT HOLDING ON RWY 15 HAD HIS TKOF CLRNC CANCELED AND WAS HELD FOR A FEW ADDITIONAL MINS. THE PROB AROSE WHEN WE REQUESTED A TOUCH-AND-GO AND AN ILS TO VNY AFTER THAT. SOCAL APCH ADVISED THAT HE HAD OUR REQUEST AND THAT DUE TO TFC AND LOW IFR, WE MAY NEED TO LAND AND REFILE. HE WOULD KEEP US ADVISED.
