Narrative:

We departed juneau at XX45Z, arrived sitka XY28Z. En route altitude 16000 ft. We were cleared for the lda DME 11 approach to the sitka airport at approximately 40 mi north of the bka VOR on the victor airway. We started a descent to 7000 ft (the ma for on the victor airway) and tracked inbound to 20 mi on the bka VOR. At this point, we initiated a right turn to intercept the isit localizer (still maintaining 7000). Upon localizer intercept we followed the published step down procedures and landed. On arrival at sitka the flight service advised us that center wanted to be kept advised in the future if we planned to use this procedure. Center normally provides vectors to intercept the localizer similar to the path we flew. We believe that the existing transition could be simplified and improved with a DME arc to intercept the localizer.

Title: ACR MLG FLC EXECUTES NONSTANDARD APCH TO SIT.

Narrative: WE DEPARTED JUNEAU AT XX45Z, ARRIVED SITKA XY28Z. ENRTE ALT 16000 FT. WE WERE CLRED FOR THE LDA DME 11 APCH TO THE SITKA ARPT AT APPROX 40 MI N OF THE BKA VOR ON THE VICTOR AIRWAY. WE STARTED A DSCNT TO 7000 FT (THE MA FOR ON THE VICTOR AIRWAY) AND TRACKED INBOUND TO 20 MI ON THE BKA VOR. AT THIS POINT, WE INITIATED A R TURN TO INTERCEPT THE ISIT LOC (STILL MAINTAINING 7000). UPON LOC INTERCEPT WE FOLLOWED THE PUBLISHED STEP DOWN PROCS AND LANDED. ON ARR AT SITKA THE FLT SVC ADVISED US THAT CTR WANTED TO BE KEPT ADVISED IN THE FUTURE IF WE PLANNED TO USE THIS PROC. CTR NORMALLY PROVIDES VECTORS TO INTERCEPT THE LOC SIMILAR TO THE PATH WE FLEW. WE BELIEVE THAT THE EXISTING TRANSITION COULD BE SIMPLIFIED AND IMPROVED WITH A DME ARC TO INTERCEPT THE LOC.
