Narrative:

ZNY gave us a clearance to descend to 11000 and issued us the altimeter setting of 29.36. The copilot read back 29.86 which was the altimeter setting the flight engineer had erroneously written down on the changeover information. Center did not correct the error during readback and we descended 600 ft below before center informed us that our mode C was indicating 10400 instead of 11000. We reset the correct altimeter setting and climbed back to 11000. A greater awareness of the transition altimeter setting by the entire flight crew would have prevented this situation.
