Narrative:
Installed a sportsman STOL kit mar/fri/92 with assurance local a&I would update logs and necessary 337's weight and balance. Had an exhaust valve on aircraft fail. Flew her into brainerd for maintenance. Local FAA inspector asking for logs. Realized I should have driven to a&I and had logs paperwork before flight instead of taking his word it was done. In future preflight, paperwork before aircraft. FAA called me on the phone asking when the propeller strike occurred. There was no propeller strike. Asked about failed engine. Told them engine didn't quit. No propeller strike. No engine tear down required. Propeller was overhauled and ad compliance 75 hours ago with fresh annual inspection. They repeatedly asked me when propeller was changed? Ended conversation with him telling me he wanted aircraft repaired safely and I gave him name of ia who did the weight and balance 337 logbooks. I've since contacted 3 engine shops and FAA representative who stated no tear down or overhaul required. Clean engine, drop pan, flush, repair/replace cylinder and piston, yellow tag, and sign off as top overhaul and fly away. I'm filing this report because I do not believe in a friendlier FAA or that they're here to help me. Seems more of a harassment, but to cover my butt, I'm filing this form.
