Narrative:
During the departure of flight X from dtw-syr on 3/92 a TCASII RA was issued. The altitude of flight X was 10000 ft on a heading of 120 degrees. The traffic aircraft Y, first appeared on TCASII as a yellow DOT, also at 10000 ft, at the edge of the warning area. Within a few seconds the yellow DOT changed to a red square. TCASII issued a RA of 2500 ft plus and announced 'climb, climb now.' at the same time the RA was issued ATC instructed us to turn to 050 degrees and maintain 10000 ft. We elected to follow the RA while in the climb and complying with the TCASII resolution, TCASII instructed us to 'increase climb.' at 12800 ft TCASII announced 'clear of conflict' and we leveled at 13000 ft still on a 120 degree heading. During the execution of the RA the vertical separation was as little as 0 ft to a maximum of 400 ft. The horizontal separation was indiscernible. Supplemental information from acn 206163. The horizontal separation was very small (the 2 symbols, our aircraft and the traffic, appeared almost colocated on the TCASII screen).
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ALTDEV ALT EXCURSION IN FLC PLT RESPONSE TO TCASII RA. PLT ELECTED TO NOT FOLLOW HDG GIVEN BY ATC. HDG TRACK DEV.
Narrative: DURING THE DEP OF FLT X FROM DTW-SYR ON 3/92 A TCASII RA WAS ISSUED. THE ALT OF FLT X WAS 10000 FT ON A HDG OF 120 DEGS. THE TFC ACFT Y, FIRST APPEARED ON TCASII AS A YELLOW DOT, ALSO AT 10000 FT, AT THE EDGE OF THE WARNING AREA. WITHIN A FEW SECONDS THE YELLOW DOT CHANGED TO A RED SQUARE. TCASII ISSUED A RA OF 2500 FT PLUS AND ANNOUNCED 'CLB, CLB NOW.' AT THE SAME TIME THE RA WAS ISSUED ATC INSTRUCTED US TO TURN TO 050 DEGS AND MAINTAIN 10000 FT. WE ELECTED TO FOLLOW THE RA WHILE IN THE CLB AND COMPLYING WITH THE TCASII RESOLUTION, TCASII INSTRUCTED US TO 'INCREASE CLB.' AT 12800 FT TCASII ANNOUNCED 'CLR OF CONFLICT' AND WE LEVELED AT 13000 FT STILL ON A 120 DEG HDG. DURING THE EXECUTION OF THE RA THE VERTICAL SEPARATION WAS AS LITTLE AS 0 FT TO A MAX OF 400 FT. THE HORIZ SEPARATION WAS INDISCERNIBLE. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 206163. THE HORIZ SEPARATION WAS VERY SMALL (THE 2 SYMBOLS, OUR ACFT AND THE TFC, APPEARED ALMOST COLOCATED ON THE TCASII SCREEN).
