Narrative:
Departing from psp, we inadvertently followed the 'lost communication' procedure on the palm springs 2 departure instead of the normal procedure. While turning direct to the VOR I noticed the mistake, contacted departure control (after receiving no handoff from the tower) and was given an amended heading and altitude to fly -- no conflict with other traffic arose. Problem most likely caused by not following normal departure briefing procedure and lack of recognition of the appropriate section of the departure diagram. Time from taxi clearance to takeoff clearance was unusually short causing us to hurry through duties -- checklist was accurately completed, briefing was not. This situation brought to light the necessity of thorough briefing procedures even when the WX is clear and the handling by ATC is quick. The extra min taken to understand the proper procedure would have alleviated the whole situation and not delayed our flight a bit.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: HDG TRACK DEV DURING A NON ADHERENCE TO DEP PROC AND ATC CLRNC FLT PLAN RTE.
Narrative: DEPARTING FROM PSP, WE INADVERTENTLY FOLLOWED THE 'LOST COM' PROC ON THE PALM SPRINGS 2 DEP INSTEAD OF THE NORMAL PROC. WHILE TURNING DIRECT TO THE VOR I NOTICED THE MISTAKE, CONTACTED DEP CTL (AFTER RECEIVING NO HDOF FROM THE TWR) AND WAS GIVEN AN AMENDED HDG AND ALT TO FLY -- NO CONFLICT WITH OTHER TFC AROSE. PROBLEM MOST LIKELY CAUSED BY NOT FOLLOWING NORMAL DEP BRIEFING PROC AND LACK OF RECOGNITION OF THE APPROPRIATE SECTION OF THE DEP DIAGRAM. TIME FROM TAXI CLRNC TO TKOF CLRNC WAS UNUSUALLY SHORT CAUSING US TO HURRY THROUGH DUTIES -- CHKLIST WAS ACCURATELY COMPLETED, BRIEFING WAS NOT. THIS SITUATION BROUGHT TO LIGHT THE NECESSITY OF THOROUGH BRIEFING PROCS EVEN WHEN THE WX IS CLR AND THE HANDLING BY ATC IS QUICK. THE EXTRA MIN TAKEN TO UNDERSTAND THE PROPER PROC WOULD HAVE ALLEVIATED THE WHOLE SITUATION AND NOT DELAYED OUR FLT A BIT.
