Narrative:
First officer landed on runway 24R at lax. After slowing sufficiently I took control and cleared the runway at highspd turnoff #65. Expecting to hold short of runway 24L, I had slowed the aircraft to a near stop when the tower advised 'cross 24L and contact ground.' at this point I was nearly perpendicular to 24L, and the blue taxiway edge lights were visible across from my position. Not realizing that I had to make a right turn on 24L and then an immediate left to remain on taxiway 65, I crossed at a slight diagonal from my position on 65 and entered what I thought was the taxiway from between 2 blue edge lights. Only when I cleared the runway did I realize I was in the filleted area to the east of 65. Upon realizing that the hard surface I was on was not a taxiway, I made a right turn and reentered 65 a few ft to the west. I feel that this area is very poorly marked, and that, coupled with my lack of experience of runway exit at that particular intersection during hours of darkness contributed to my misunderstanding of the markings.

Title: EXCURSION FROM TAXIWAY IN A NIGHT OP BY ACR MLG.
Narrative: FO LANDED ON RWY 24R AT LAX. AFTER SLOWING SUFFICIENTLY I TOOK CTL AND CLRED THE RWY AT HIGHSPD TURNOFF #65. EXPECTING TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 24L, I HAD SLOWED THE ACFT TO A NEAR STOP WHEN THE TWR ADVISED 'CROSS 24L AND CONTACT GND.' AT THIS POINT I WAS NEARLY PERPENDICULAR TO 24L, AND THE BLUE TAXIWAY EDGE LIGHTS WERE VISIBLE ACROSS FROM MY POS. NOT REALIZING THAT I HAD TO MAKE A R TURN ON 24L AND THEN AN IMMEDIATE L TO REMAIN ON TAXIWAY 65, I CROSSED AT A SLIGHT DIAGONAL FROM MY POS ON 65 AND ENTERED WHAT I THOUGHT WAS THE TAXIWAY FROM BTWN 2 BLUE EDGE LIGHTS. ONLY WHEN I CLRED THE RWY DID I REALIZE I WAS IN THE FILLETED AREA TO THE E OF 65. UPON REALIZING THAT THE HARD SURFACE I WAS ON WAS NOT A TAXIWAY, I MADE A R TURN AND REENTERED 65 A FEW FT TO THE W. I FEEL THAT THIS AREA IS VERY POORLY MARKED, AND THAT, COUPLED WITH MY LACK OF EXPERIENCE OF RWY EXIT AT THAT PARTICULAR INTXN DURING HRS OF DARKNESS CONTRIBUTED TO MY MISUNDERSTANDING OF THE MARKINGS.
