Narrative:

Received inbound equipment approximately 2 hours late due to ATC strike for slowdown at manila international airport, 4/92. Preflight for both pilots and flight engineer normal. During taxi, (short taxi) aircraft seemed to require a bit more power than usual. Outside air temperature approximately 91 degrees with full load of 400 people the likely reason. Flight engineer reported that all tires (18) normal and no excessive brake heat on walk around. Takeoff normal except acceleration a bit slow. Suspected a dragging brake on the left side; therefore left the gear down after takeoff for approximately 4 min for maximum cooling. Approach to nrt normal. Touchdown normal with normal reversing. Aircraft track and feel normal except slight pull to left. Taxi in normal except still requiring a little extra power. 20 seconds or so from the gate, ground advised us that they observed some tire debris and smoke on the touchdown. Continued to the gate and shut down engines. We later learned that both rear tires on the left body gear truck had blown out and separated. Both tires were replaced. We do not know what caused the dual tire failure at touchdown but we now think that we may have had a deflated tire at mnl and the landing put excessive pressure on the one remaining on the rear side of the truck. (The left and right rear body gear trucks are the first of 16 to make contact with the pavement). The runway was shut down to collect tire debris. The tires were replaced and the aircraft continued on to ord. Supplemental information from acn 207709. I met aircraft at gate. After crew deplaned, we enplaned. Cockpit was congested with maintenance personnel, so I elected to complete the external preflight prior to the cockpit preflight. Therefore, the external preflight was completed within 20 mins of the previous landing. No irregularities were noted during preflight.

Title: ACFT EQUIP PROBLEM, BLOWN TIRES.

Narrative: RECEIVED INBOUND EQUIP APPROX 2 HRS LATE DUE TO ATC STRIKE FOR SLOWDOWN AT MANILA INTL ARPT, 4/92. PREFLT FOR BOTH PLTS AND FLT ENGINEER NORMAL. DURING TAXI, (SHORT TAXI) ACFT SEEMED TO REQUIRE A BIT MORE PWR THAN USUAL. OUTSIDE AIR TEMP APPROX 91 DEGS WITH FULL LOAD OF 400 PEOPLE THE LIKELY REASON. FLT ENGINEER RPTED THAT ALL TIRES (18) NORMAL AND NO EXCESSIVE BRAKE HEAT ON WALK AROUND. TKOF NORMAL EXCEPT ACCELERATION A BIT SLOW. SUSPECTED A DRAGGING BRAKE ON THE L SIDE; THEREFORE LEFT THE GEAR DOWN AFTER TKOF FOR APPROX 4 MIN FOR MAX COOLING. APCH TO NRT NORMAL. TOUCHDOWN NORMAL WITH NORMAL REVERSING. ACFT TRACK AND FEEL NORMAL EXCEPT SLIGHT PULL TO L. TAXI IN NORMAL EXCEPT STILL REQUIRING A LITTLE EXTRA PWR. 20 SECONDS OR SO FROM THE GATE, GND ADVISED US THAT THEY OBSERVED SOME TIRE DEBRIS AND SMOKE ON THE TOUCHDOWN. CONTINUED TO THE GATE AND SHUT DOWN ENGS. WE LATER LEARNED THAT BOTH REAR TIRES ON THE L BODY GEAR TRUCK HAD BLOWN OUT AND SEPARATED. BOTH TIRES WERE REPLACED. WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT CAUSED THE DUAL TIRE FAILURE AT TOUCHDOWN BUT WE NOW THINK THAT WE MAY HAVE HAD A DEFLATED TIRE AT MNL AND THE LNDG PUT EXCESSIVE PRESSURE ON THE ONE REMAINING ON THE REAR SIDE OF THE TRUCK. (THE L AND R REAR BODY GEAR TRUCKS ARE THE FIRST OF 16 TO MAKE CONTACT WITH THE PAVEMENT). THE RWY WAS SHUT DOWN TO COLLECT TIRE DEBRIS. THE TIRES WERE REPLACED AND THE ACFT CONTINUED ON TO ORD. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 207709. I MET ACFT AT GATE. AFTER CREW DEPLANED, WE ENPLANED. COCKPIT WAS CONGESTED WITH MAINT PERSONNEL, SO I ELECTED TO COMPLETE THE EXTERNAL PREFLT PRIOR TO THE COCKPIT PREFLT. THEREFORE, THE EXTERNAL PREFLT WAS COMPLETED WITHIN 20 MINS OF THE PREVIOUS LNDG. NO IRREGULARITIES WERE NOTED DURING PREFLT.
