Narrative:
While on left downwind for runway 13 at provo, an unidentified high wing small aircraft came at us virtually head-on. I was kneeling between the 2 pilots observing a flight check when I noticed the small aircraft at 12 O'clock to us. I simultaneously yelled 'duck' and reached up and pushed the control column down to descend. The 2 pilots I was observing were busy working a checklist and didn't see anything until I yelled. The other aircraft was transiting the area and was in the wrong place unaware (I think) of the traffic or airport. 2 things I think need to be done: install a VFR tower at the airport and make a far change to make traffic patterns at uncontrolled airports mandatory instead of recommended.

Title: NMAC.
Narrative: WHILE ON L DOWNWIND FOR RWY 13 AT PROVO, AN UNIDENTIFIED HIGH WING SMA CAME AT US VIRTUALLY HEAD-ON. I WAS KNEELING BTWN THE 2 PLTS OBSERVING A FLT CHK WHEN I NOTICED THE SMA AT 12 O'CLOCK TO US. I SIMULTANEOUSLY YELLED 'DUCK' AND REACHED UP AND PUSHED THE CTL COLUMN DOWN TO DSND. THE 2 PLTS I WAS OBSERVING WERE BUSY WORKING A CHKLIST AND DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING UNTIL I YELLED. THE OTHER ACFT WAS TRANSITING THE AREA AND WAS IN THE WRONG PLACE UNAWARE (I THINK) OF THE TFC OR ARPT. 2 THINGS I THINK NEED TO BE DONE: INSTALL A VFR TWR AT THE ARPT AND MAKE A FAR CHANGE TO MAKE TFC PATTERNS AT UNCTLED ARPTS MANDATORY INSTEAD OF RECOMMENDED.
