Narrative:
On jump run for skydiving operations, approach control asked for altitude check. He had limited me to 8500 ft for traffic but did not call traffic out to me. He reported that mode C readout was 8900 ft, I reported back that I was at 8700 ft and correcting back to 8500 ft. The controller reported again that his mode C readout was at 8700 ft when I had corrected for deviation. He repeated his need for me at 8500 ft when I spotted the traffic which passed overhead at least 500 ft above. I reported to approach control that I spotted traffic. Evasive action was not required on my part and I did not even hear on the radio that the jet crew had seen me at all. Better vigilance on my part would have kept me at my assigned altitude. It would have been nice if the controller had given me a TA for the jet that passed over me. It would be good to mention in the NASA ASRS callback newsletter about special vigilance required by all jump pilots flying up high due to high speed (above 250 KTS) traffic and high volume traffic when drop zones operate close to airways or approach corridors.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: SMA PLT FLYING A JUMP MISSION EXCEEDS HIS LIMITED ALT FROM APCH CTLR AND HAS AN NMAC WITH JET TRANSPORT.
Narrative: ON JUMP RUN FOR SKYDIVING OPS, APCH CTL ASKED FOR ALT CHK. HE HAD LIMITED ME TO 8500 FT FOR TFC BUT DID NOT CALL TFC OUT TO ME. HE RPTED THAT MODE C READOUT WAS 8900 FT, I RPTED BACK THAT I WAS AT 8700 FT AND CORRECTING BACK TO 8500 FT. THE CTLR RPTED AGAIN THAT HIS MODE C READOUT WAS AT 8700 FT WHEN I HAD CORRECTED FOR DEV. HE REPEATED HIS NEED FOR ME AT 8500 FT WHEN I SPOTTED THE TFC WHICH PASSED OVERHEAD AT LEAST 500 FT ABOVE. I RPTED TO APCH CTL THAT I SPOTTED TFC. EVASIVE ACTION WAS NOT REQUIRED ON MY PART AND I DID NOT EVEN HEAR ON THE RADIO THAT THE JET CREW HAD SEEN ME AT ALL. BETTER VIGILANCE ON MY PART WOULD HAVE KEPT ME AT MY ASSIGNED ALT. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE IF THE CTLR HAD GIVEN ME A TA FOR THE JET THAT PASSED OVER ME. IT WOULD BE GOOD TO MENTION IN THE NASA ASRS CALLBACK NEWSLETTER ABOUT SPECIAL VIGILANCE REQUIRED BY ALL JUMP PLTS FLYING UP HIGH DUE TO HIGH SPD (ABOVE 250 KTS) TFC AND HIGH VOLUME TFC WHEN DROP ZONES OPERATE CLOSE TO AIRWAYS OR APCH CORRIDORS.
