Narrative:
I had filed IFR direct to kendall-tamiami executive airport with the intention of using the LORAN to go direct and cross radials off vors along our route to monitor our position and have something for backup in case the LORAN lost its signals. I was in a hurry to get passenger X down to miami and to try and beat the WX back to memphis. I had flown with an instructor before I had gotten my instructor license and he had used the exact same model LORAN to go IFR direct also. I assumed it was fine to use as long as VMC prevailed. However, once we were en route, I was planning to cancel IFR once we could descend VFR to our destination. A controller asked me how I was navigating direct and once I told him, he had nothing else to say. Roughly 30 mins later, I received a new clearance to tmb airport using victor airways.
