Narrative:
Our flight departed lga and we were working ny departure en route to white intersection. ATC advised that we had VFR traffic 500 ft above our level off altitude. As we crossed under the traffic (which we did not see), our TCASII announced, 'monitor vertical speed.' the PIC elected to descend approximately 500 ft until we were clear of the conflict. We then climbed back to our assigned altitude. We did not inform the controller of the evasive action in a timely fashion.
