Narrative:
While working ny approach on the nanci 4 arrival, ATC advised that we had known traffic 500 ft below us that would cross under us and that we were to 'maintain 11000 ft.' as we closed on the traffic we received a 'climb, climb,' TCASII RA. Our aircraft was climbed to approximately 11500 ft. We immediately advised the controller that we're climbing in response to a RA from our TCASII system. The controller was upset and stated that he had provided legal separation. We returned to our assigned altitude and completed to arrival.
