Narrative:
Over the past few yrs the habitat of the deer has been built upon -- pushing them in greater numbers toward the airfield. Nantucket airport is only partially fenced. The entire southeast-southwest sides are open. The commuter aircraft in this reported event is but one of numerous events of deer crossing directly in front of landing or departing aircraft. Deer tend to stay under cover during the day and graze in the evening. This makes it difficult for controllers to spot their movement. It's usually dusk and they are provided with a coat color that blends in with the ground cover. 2 aircraft have been damaged in recent yrs (1 commuter) having hit deer on landing. Despite repeated notification to airport management that the controllers feel the problem has gone from a minor occasional incident to an almost daily safety compromising situation -- nothing has been done to remedy the situation. The airport must either move to quickly fence itself in or obtain the necessary permits to hunt deer out of season and eradicate the population from this part of the land. The same deer/aircraft event happened with an light transport/deer later the same evening.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A PORTION OF ARPT BOUNDARY NOT FENCED, THUS ALLOWING DEER TO ENTER ACFT MOVEMENT AREAS AND INTERFERING WITH THEIR OP.
Narrative: OVER THE PAST FEW YRS THE HABITAT OF THE DEER HAS BEEN BUILT UPON -- PUSHING THEM IN GREATER NUMBERS TOWARD THE AIRFIELD. NANTUCKET ARPT IS ONLY PARTIALLY FENCED. THE ENTIRE SE-SW SIDES ARE OPEN. THE COMMUTER ACFT IN THIS RPTED EVENT IS BUT ONE OF NUMEROUS EVENTS OF DEER XING DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF LNDG OR DEPARTING ACFT. DEER TEND TO STAY UNDER COVER DURING THE DAY AND GRAZE IN THE EVENING. THIS MAKES IT DIFFICULT FOR CTLRS TO SPOT THEIR MOVEMENT. IT'S USUALLY DUSK AND THEY ARE PROVIDED WITH A COAT COLOR THAT BLENDS IN WITH THE GND COVER. 2 ACFT HAVE BEEN DAMAGED IN RECENT YRS (1 COMMUTER) HAVING HIT DEER ON LNDG. DESPITE REPEATED NOTIFICATION TO ARPT MGMNT THAT THE CTLRS FEEL THE PROBLEM HAS GONE FROM A MINOR OCCASIONAL INCIDENT TO AN ALMOST DAILY SAFETY COMPROMISING SITUATION -- NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO REMEDY THE SITUATION. THE ARPT MUST EITHER MOVE TO QUICKLY FENCE ITSELF IN OR OBTAIN THE NECESSARY PERMITS TO HUNT DEER OUT OF SEASON AND ERADICATE THE POPULATION FROM THIS PART OF THE LAND. THE SAME DEER/ACFT EVENT HAPPENED WITH AN LTT/DEER LATER THE SAME EVENING.
